New British Clothing Industry Association Chairman sets out the first steps

Peter Lucas, the newly appointed Chairman of the British Clothing Industry Association (BCIA), has set out his plans to develop the organisation.

His aim is to encourage greater interaction with businesses within the clothing sector and the fashion industry as a whole, in order to attract new members to a more vibrant organisation.

He took on his new role at the BCIA's Annual General Meeting on Thursday 29th May, succeeding James McAdam, who had held the post for the past 17 years.

Lucas's priority is to ensure the Association better reflects the industry as it looks today. Lucas says: "The British fashion industry is alive and well. We need to build an organisation that mirrors where the industry is now and where it is going."

His first step will be to bring to the running of the BCIA more people that are active in the industry and who represent the broad spread of the sector, such as menswear, womenswear, knitwear and workwear.

At the same time, Lucas is looking to work more closely with other trade associations within the fashion industry. "We need to be able to talk as one industry and with one voice. The BCIA has the potential to be the focal point for the industry so we can all work together for the benefit of those within the sector." Discussions between BCIA and UK Fashion Exports about improved links have already begun.

However, he is keen to stress that he will also safeguard the financial stability of the BCIA. "What we have today has come from the hard work of our predecessors. Our resources have to be used for the long-term enhancement of the industry."

Lucas adds: "It is an honour to be asked to take on this role. I look forward to being able to make a positive contribution to the way our industry and our Association operate. I would also like to thank James McAdam for the time and effort he put into developing the BCIA."

Lucas will be supported in his role by John Miln, chief executive of tie company Michelsons, who has been appointed Deputy Chairman and Treasurer of BCIA. Peter Lucas is Chairman and Chief Executive of BMB Group and Chairman of Arafa Holdings Brand Division.
