M&S names HMV's Robert Swannell as chairman

Marks & Spencer has named HMV's Robert Swannell as its next chairman, to succeed Sir Stuart Rose on January 4.

Swannell, 59, will join the board on October 4 as a non-executive director. He is currently chairman of HMV Group, senior independent director at British Land and senior independent NED at 3i Group, and was formerly vice-chairman Citi Europe and co-chairman of Citi's European Investment Bank. Rose said Swannell's appointment 'completes our succession plan and enables us to revert to standard governance practice'.

'His considerable experience of both the City and the commercial world will be a real asset to the board and the business.
