Toy retailer Hamleys has revealed that like-for-like sales at its stores in the UK and Ireland rose 3.2% in the four weeks to 25 December 2011. Total sales increased by 3.6% while sales from international franchise stores surged by 22.4%. The strong seasonal performance is reflected in the retailer's wider performance for the year to date with UK and Ireland sales rising by 4% in the 39 weeks to 25 December 2011. Sales from international franchise stores climbed 35%. Hamleys opened its latest store in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last week which takes the total number of international franchise stores to 10. The company plans to open a further five international stores in 2012. Gudjon Reynisson, CEO of Hamleys commented: "We are very pleased with our strong performance over the Christmas period, despite the difficult economic environment. This is testament to the magical shopping experience we provide to our customers and the wide variety of products available in our stores.
